✦ HR QUEST • BENEFITS REALM ✦

Benefits Sanctuary

Where employee experience meets the work behind the portal.

Employees may see a medical plan, a retirement account, a deduction on their paycheck, or an enrollment confirmation. Behind each of those moments is a much bigger benefits ecosystem involving HR, payroll, systems, vendors, providers, communication, testing, and plenty of problem solving.

My benefits experience has lived on both sides of that experience: helping employees understand what they have while also working behind the scenes to make sure the programs, systems, vendors, and processes actually work.

♥ THE EMPLOYEE VIEW

Benefits Should Feel Easier Than the Work Behind Them

Most employees should never have to think about all of the moving pieces behind their benefits. They just need clear information, accurate elections, working coverage, correct payroll deductions, useful contacts, and someone who can help when something does not make sense.

Health & Protection

Medical, dental, vision, life, disability and other benefit programs employees rely on throughout the year.

Retirement

Retirement programs, savings education, contribution questions, provider coordination and future planning.

Enrollment

New-hire enrollment, annual open enrollment, qualifying life events, elections and confirmation.

Time Away

PTO, holidays, leave programs and the policies employees depend on when life happens outside of work.

⚙ BEHIND THE PORTAL

Benefits Are an Ecosystem

A benefits program does not live in one system or with one team. Employee information, eligibility, deductions, vendors, payroll, providers and HR processes all have to connect.

Employee The person who needs all of it to work
01

Plan Administration

Eligibility, elections, employee changes, plan setup and the operational details that support benefits throughout the year.

02

System Accuracy

Validating data, enrollment results and downstream impacts so what employees select matches what the organization expects.

03

Payroll Connection

Benefits and payroll are closely connected. Elections, deductions, timing and employee changes all have to remain aligned.

04

Issue Resolution

Researching discrepancies, coordinating with partners and following an issue through until there is an actual resolution.

◇ ALLIANCE MANAGEMENT

Vendor Management Is Part of the Benefits Experience

Benefits teams rarely work alone. Brokers, benefit providers, retirement partners, payroll teams and technology vendors can all become part of the employee experience.

I have worked across those relationships to coordinate information, investigate problems, resolve employee issues, support implementation work and keep projects moving when multiple organizations are involved.

Partner Coordination

Keeping internal teams and outside providers aligned around changes, questions and next steps.

Escalation Management

Following unresolved issues instead of allowing employees to bounce endlessly between HR and a provider.

Retirement Partners

Supporting retirement administration and employee questions while coordinating with external providers.

Employee Impact

Remembering that the vendor relationship ultimately affects a real employee waiting for coverage, an answer or a correction.

A Few Things I've Worked On

Benefits work can look very different depending on the organization, but these are some of the areas where my HR, HRIS, payroll and employee-support experience have intersected.

OPEN ENROLLMENT

Supporting Enrollment at Scale

Supported benefits administration and annual enrollment activity for an employee population of more than 1,200 people, including questions, elections, issue resolution and employee communication.

1,200+ employees supported
HRIS + BENEFITS

Improving Enrollment Accuracy

Helped improve benefits enrollment accuracy through stronger processes, validation and better alignment between HR systems and employee data.

30% improvement in enrollment accuracy
PAYROLL + BENEFITS

Connecting Elections to Payroll

Worked across HR, benefits and payroll processes to reduce discrepancies and improve the accuracy of employee deductions and related benefit data.

25% improvement in payroll / benefits accuracy
EMPLOYEE EXPERIENCE

Making Complex Benefits Understandable

Helped employees navigate complex benefit and retirement questions, including federal programs where the answer often required more than simply pointing someone toward a handbook.

VENDOR MANAGEMENT

Coordinating Across Providers

Worked with outside partners and internal stakeholders to research discrepancies, coordinate changes, escalate unresolved issues and keep the employee from becoming the project manager for their own benefits problem.

Building Better Processes

Benefits administration is stronger when the surrounding HR processes are stronger. My work has included improving onboarding, employee data quality, HRIS processes and cross-functional workflows.

LIMITED-TIME EVENT

Open Enrollment Season

Open enrollment is where configuration, employee communication, vendor coordination, payroll impacts and deadlines all arrive at the same party.

01 Prepare Plans, dates, rules and requirements
02 Configure Systems, eligibility and enrollment setup
03 Validate Test before employees enter the portal
04 Educate Clear information and usable resources
05 Enroll Support employees through elections
06 Confirm Review results, deductions and issues

The goal: fewer confused employees frantically clicking buttons five minutes before the enrollment portal closes.

☾ LONG-TERM SAVE POINT

Benefits Include the Future, Too

Some of my most detailed employee-support work has involved retirement and long-term benefits. I have worked with retirement programs, employee contribution questions, providers such as Voya, and federal benefit programs including FERS, CSRS, FEHB and TSP.

Those conversations can be deeply personal because an employee may be making decisions that affect years of their life. Accuracy matters, but so does explaining the information in a way a person can actually understand.

Benefits administration may run through systems, but the outcome always lands with a person.
📜 MY PLAYBOOK

How I Approach Benefits Work

01

Make It Understandable

Employees should not need an HR certification to understand what happens when they choose a plan or ask a benefits question.

02

Validate the Details

A beautiful enrollment experience does not mean much if eligibility, elections or deductions are wrong behind the scenes.

03

Own the Handoff

When multiple teams or vendors are involved, someone still needs to follow the thread all the way through.

04

Remember the Person

A discrepancy in a spreadsheet may be a routine task to HR. To the employee waiting for coverage or a corrected paycheck, it is not.

Good Benefits Need More Than a Good Benefits Guide.

They need thoughtful administration, reliable systems, good partners, clear communication and people willing to follow the details all the way through.
